A bit of culture: « Biznagas »

09Août

Biznagas are one of the main symbols of Malaga.

Biznagas are not flowers that grow naturally from a plant but pure craftwork. It consists of sticking jasmine flowers one by one to a structure with many spikes. The jasmine flowers used for the biznagas are collected when they are still closed so that way the biznaga is easier to make and are more impressive when the flowers are in full bloom.

Biznagas are very representative of Malaga, but they go hand-in-hand with the biznaguero . These are men that will sell their biznagas and they are quite a common site around Malaga, wearing their typical costumes and filling the air with the scent of jasmine.

Jaime Pimentel, a well known local sculptor, created the statue of “El Biznaguero” in 1968. It is made of bronze and it is located in Paseo del Parque.

What is your opinion about this wonderful local tradition? Had you ever heard about biznagas or had seen the biznaguero around and wondered who they were? If you want to enjoy this tradition and visit the statue of “El Biznaguero” you can’t miss a visit to Malaga city… and there is no better time to do it than now as Malaga is celebrating its well known fair.

Malaga city is only 18 miles away from Fuengirola. You can get there easily by train. The nearest train access from Hotel Florida is Fuengirola train station located in the city centre.

Please do not forget The Fair of Malaga between the 11th – 19th of August.
